UK WIDE
The History

Woods Building Services Ltd t/a AA Woods was formed in 1994 to provide high quality asbestos remediation and surveying services to the South East of the UK. The current ownership acquired the business in 2003 which enabled significant reinvestment into AA Woods with the first phase of this strategic growth resulting in the relocation of the Head Office to Harlow in Essex.

A period of continuous growth followed, and in 2004 an additional office was opened in Poole, Dorset to service contracts in the South West. The foundations of the Poole office were built upon a term contract with Poole Housing Partnership which is still retained today and now incorporates the Borough of Poole also.

AA Woods established themselves as a market leader in the provision of asbestos solutions within the social housing sector and a concerted effort was made to offer these specialist services to registered social landlords, housing associations, local authorities, and main contractors who deliver this niche work. This strategy enabled AA Woods to secure a national partnering contract with Mears Group PLC in 2007. This partnership provided the opportunity for AA Woods to strengthen their operational presence in other parts of the UK and formed the basis of their business strategy to become a national contractor.

Now in 2013, AA Woods operates from five offices in Harlow (HQ), Poole, Milton Keynes, Pontyclun (South Wales), and Rhyl. All of the regional offices were opened through organic growth by way of securing a range of contracts on a national scale. The period from 2009 to 2012 saw AA Woods secure in excess of 40 public sector OJEU tendered frameworks and term contracts, which significantly contributed to the growth of the business.

The Vision

With the business establishing itself as one of the UK’s leading asbestos remediation contractors and offering a truly national service via a network of regional offices, the business is looking to further expand upon its recent successes.

AA Woods now undertake in excess of 15,000 jobs per annum and at present the company works across a large range of market sectors and has an impressive, diverse client base. Core sectors of operation include local authority, housing, education, NHS, MOD, Insurance, general construction and industrial sites. Moving forward we want to further increase our exposure in additional sectors such as marine and utilities.

Our vision is to increase the size of the business, whilst offering additional services to our existing client base, ultimately providing a total environmental solution.

New guidance on the removal of external AIB soffits

On the 12th November 2012, the Asbestos Licensing Unit (ALU) and the Asbestos Liaison Group (ALG) released guidance on The Removal of External AIB Soffits, by way of ALG Memo 03/2012. This document was produced to provide information, practical guidance and advice to the asbestos industry and other interested stakeholders on the removal of external asbestos insulating board (AIB) soffits.

The document gives practical advice on work practices, procedures and precautions and the controls that should be employed when external AIB soffits are removed.

This document is designed to assist licensed asbestos contractors in their compliance with the requirements of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 (CAR 2012). The guidance will also be useful to “Home Improvement Companies” (HICs) and other organisations who engage the licensed asbestos contractors and/or who make decisions on whether work is licensable or not.

HSE issue guidance on compliance with CAR 2012

The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 came into force on 6 April 2012, updating previous asbestos regulations to take account of the European Commission’s view that the UK had not fully implemented the EU Directive on exposure to asbestos (Directive 2009/148/EC).

The changes mean that some types of non-licensed work with asbestos now have additional requirements, i.e. notification of work, medical surveillance and record keeping. All other requirements remain unchanged.
